IndyCar Officially Returns to Europe with Barcelona Race in 2027

The IndyCar series has officially announced its long-awaited return to European soil for the first time in two decades. Under a multi-year agreement, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain is set to host its inaugural event on July 18, 2027. This landmark move marks the championship's first race outside of North America since competing on the streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil, back in 2013, bridging a massive geographical gap for international fans.

For European motorsport enthusiasts, this event ends a lengthy absence of premier single-seater racing on the continent since the series last visited the TT Circuit Assen in the Netherlands in 2007. Serving as the centerpiece of Phase Two for the 2027 season schedule, the race in Spain holds massive significance. Most notably, it provides Barcelona-born star and multi-time champion Alex Palou with the extraordinary opportunity to contest a home grand prix in front of his local supporters.

Penske Entertainment Corp. President and CEO Mark Miles expressed immense enthusiasm regarding the historic expansion into European territory. As reported by Autosport, Miles emphasized the monumental scale of the new multi-year deal. "This is a monumental day for our sport," Miles stated, highlighting the ambition to bring their ultra-competitive brand of wheel-to-wheel racing directly to European fans while showcasing Palou on home turf where supporters have long awaited his live performance.

Meanwhile, the star driver from Chip Ganassi Racing shared his profound excitement over the historic announcement. Palou, who secured his fifth championship title and etched his name into history by matching consecutive title records, admitted the magnitude of a home race is difficult to put into words. "I’m so excited to be part of IndyCar’s first race in Barcelona," Palou expressed, adding that his squad will push to the limit to secure the ultimate trophy next July.

Located in Montmelo just outside Barcelona, the renowned circuit has served as a premier international racing destination since opening in its modern form in 1991. Famed for hosting elite global championships including Formula 1 and MotoGP, the venue boasts high-speed corners and a technical layout that will test the limits of IndyCar machinery. The addition of the series underscores a strategic push by local organizers to elevate the venue's world-class offerings and deliver an unforgettable spectacle.
