The IndyCar series has officially taken a major step in its global expansion by adding the Barcelona-Catalunya circuit to the upcoming 2027 racing calendar. This addition of the Spanish venue marks the most substantial year-on-year change for the championship, as series organizers look to capitalize heavily on the massive success of five-time title winner Alex Palou.
Scheduled to take place from July 16 to 18, the event has been secured through a multi-year agreement. This milestone also signifies the first time IndyCar will race outside of North America since visiting Brazil back in 2013. Looking further back into the pre-unification era, the series—then operating as Champ Car—last competed in Europe back in 2007 at Assen in the Netherlands.
Penske Entertainment Corporation president and CEO Mark Miles shared his excitement regarding this monumental shift. "Ðто is a monumental day for our sport," Miles stated. "We are pleased to be able to take our ultra-competitive brand of wheel-to-wheel racing to Europe and thrilled that we can showcase IndyCar in Alex Palou’s hometown. We have seen Alex’s remarkable skill and talent for several years and know his fans in Spain have been clamouring to watch him race in person. We cannot wait to see the IndyCar Series compete at one of the world’s most recognisable motorsports venues set against the backdrop of a very historic and breathtaking international destination like Barcelona."

Meanwhile, Alex Palou admitted that it was difficult to express his emotions about finally securing a home Grand Prix in front of his local supporters. "It’s hard to put into words," Palou mentioned. "I’m so excited to be part of IndyCar’s first race in Barcelona. I know the fans are going to love it, and I think we are going to put on a great show. We’re going to try hard with the team at Chip Ganassi Racing to bring home the trophy in July."
While Barcelona-Catalunya serves as the marquee addition to a slightly reduced overall calendar, notable omissions remain, including the absence of Washington following its one-off celebration and Nashville which faces logistical venue shifts.
