The IndyCar championship has officially unveiled its complete 2027 calendar, marking a groundbreaking milestone in the history of the premier North American open-wheel series. Following widespread rumors circulating within the paddock over recent days, organizers have confirmed that the Barcelona circuit in Catalonia will feature in the second half of the upcoming season. This confirmation brings an end to a nearly twenty-year absence of the championship racing on European soil, representing the first time the category will ever host an official race in Spain.
This multi-year agreement that successfully brings American open-wheel racing back to Europe was heavily driven by five-time champion Alex Palou. Born in Catalonia, the star driver is now set to contest his ultimate home race in front of his passionate local fans on July 18. The inclusion of Barcelona highlights the series' renewed global ambitions, even though the 2027 schedule features only one other international trip outside the United States, which will take place at the street circuit in Markham, Canada.
Looking back at history, the last time a comparable American open-wheel category raced in Europe was back in 2007 during the final season of the Champ Car World Series before its unification. Back then, events were held at Zolder in Belgium and Assen in the Netherlands, following earlier historic visits to Brands Hatch in England and the Lausitzring in Germany. The release of the 2027 calendar completes the puzzle after the initial 'Phase 1' announcement back in August revealed only the first eight rounds of the year.

The demanding 2027 campaign will kick off on March 7 at St. Petersburg, before heading to the Indianapolis Street Course on May 15. The crown jewel of the season, the iconic 111th running of the Indianapolis 500, is scheduled for May 30. Action will then shift toward Gateway Motorsport Park on June 13 and Road America on June 27, before the thrilling transatlantic journey to Europe takes center stage in July.
As the championship reaches its decisive final stretch, competitors will face a intense doubleheader at the Milwaukee Mile on August 28 and 29. The grueling season will ultimately reach its dramatic conclusion at the iconic Laguna Seca circuit on September 5, promising an unforgettable championship battle from the opening round to the final checkered flag.
