Francesco Bagnaia Laments Calendar Changes Ahead of the 2026 Australian GP

Arriving at the iconic Phillip Island circuit, Francesco Bagnaia is aiming for a strong comeback following a difficult weekend in Indonesia where he failed to finish the main race. Eager to turn the page, the Italian rider admitted that his primary focus this weekend is simply to enjoy riding on one of the few remaining traditional high-speed tracks left on the calendar before it is replaced by Adelaide in 2027.

Sharing his thoughts in comments gathered by collaborator Manuel Pecino, Bagnaia expressed clear disappointment regarding the direction modern Grand Prix racing is taking. The factory Ducati star emphasized that true riders vastly prefer the demanding, high-speed nature of layouts like Phillip Island over newer, sterile facility designs.

"It is a real shame that this is the last one here. An emblematic circuit of pure speed. There are not many left like that. It is going in another direction and it is a shame, because us riders certainly have more fun on circuits like this," Bagnaia stated, as reported by Motosan.es, while highlighting the unique layout that rewards bravery and precision.

Beyond the layout, the weekend brings the traditional meteorological lottery of coastal Victoria. Bagnaia noted that the extreme temperature swings and unpredictable winds will require massive adaptability from the entire grid, turning setup work into a critical guessing game ahead of race day.

"Normally, until Friday the weather is great. But then, on Saturday and Sunday, something happens because every time it changes radically. We go from 27 degrees today to 12 on Sunday, then the wind changes completely and it will rain," Bagnaia added, stressing that having absolute confidence in the front-end feel of the machine will be the ultimate key to survival in the wet or dry.
