Alex Marquez has openly voiced strong criticism against the increasingly packed and physically demanding MotoGP calendar. The Gresini rider believes that the premier class world championship must take immediate action by cutting the number of sprint races in half, or even more, to safeguard the long-term well-being of the sport's young stars.

Ever since sprint races were introduced in 2023 to boost weekend entertainment, they have become a mandatory fixture at every single Grand Prix round. This addition has pushed the total number of races in a single season to a combined 44. The situation is set to become even more demanding as a new format is scheduled to arrive, incorporating sprint qualifying sessions for the very first time.

Widespread criticism regarding this heavy workload has previously been echoed by riders throughout the paddock, including during the Indonesian Grand Prix. Marquez emphasized that the physical and mental pressure currently placed on competitors has gone too far, noting that crash risks rise consistently as machines get faster while riders push at the absolute limit for longer periods.

Speaking to GPOne, the Spanish rider highlighted the plight of rookies and rising talents such as Pedro Acosta and Fermin Aldeguer, who must endure relentless schedules while still in their early twenties. He stressed that championship organizers must take care of young riders rather than exposing them to excessive injury risks fueled by high-intensity short races.

Marquez concluded that the sport should focus on building long-term heroes rather than short-lived ones. By reducing the calendar to feature just six or seven sprint events per year, the championship could achieve a much healthier balance for everyone involved in the paddock.
