While the WRC paddock is still grappling with uncertainty over manufacturers' future, the FIA has set an ambitious double target: attracting a Chinese manufacturer and hosting a round of the World Rally Championship in the world's largest automotive market.
FIA Deputy President for Sport Malcolm Wilson stated firmly that this double target is not just a talking point. "Well, that's a clear target, I have to tell you. The promoter is fully aware of that, and we're aware of it. We want a Chinese manufacturer and a Chinese round," he said.
The manufacturer situation in the WRC remains a major question mark. Toyota is currently the only manufacturer committed to building a car to the new regulations for next year's top category. Hyundai is still weighing its future, while M-Sport has decided not to build a new car and will compete with the WRC Rally2 Kit designed for Rally2 cars.

Wilson believes both ambitions are entirely achievable. "Absolutely, that's possible. There are already two parties in China competing to have an event there. There are other countries as well that are interested in having a WRC event. That's great for us. It gives us the confidence to keep doing what we're doing," he explained.
He also stressed that interest from countries to host events remains high despite the WRC's transition period. "There's still a lot of work to do, and we're in this interim period. But the fact that we're in this interim period and there is still interest from countries in having an event is really refreshing," Wilson added.
FIA Technical Director Xavier Mestelan Pinon revealed that the FIA's Manufacturers' Committee now includes three Chinese manufacturers that have recently joined, with two more in discussions. "It's a signal that Chinese manufacturers are getting closer and closer to our championships. That's a fact. It's a good signal for European manufacturers, but above all, it's a good sign that new manufacturers are coming into the FIA family," he said.
Wilson also shared a personal target: "If we could achieve six constructors by 2029, I would be very happy. That would be great progress." This target underscores the WRC's new direction to become the most relevant championship for manufacturers in the FIA portfolio.
