Max Verstappen suffered a massive crash at the Dutch Grand Prix as mixed conditions at Zandvoort caught him out. The Red Bull driver was battling teammate Liam Lawson for seventh place when he clipped the inside of the final corner, spearing his car in the opposite direction and into the barriers.

The impact sent debris flying across the circuit, with Gabriel Bortoleto also spinning behind as the red flag was quickly brought out. Verstappen was quick to report he was okay on the radio, while expressing his disappointment that his home race had come to an early end.

Earlier in the lap, Verstappen had gone wheel-to-wheel with Lawson, with the Kiwi getting his elbows out as he attempted to get past his teammate. Lando Norris got a perfect start from pole to maintain his lead, while George Russell dropped behind Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli after a poor getaway. Oscar Piastri also lost a position at the start to Charles Leclerc and sits fifth after the opening lap.

This crash is a devastating blow for Verstappen, who was eager to impress in front of his home crowd. Prior to the incident, he had shown competitive pace despite Red Bull struggling to match the front-runners. Failing to finish his home race is certainly a bitter moment that will be remembered for a long time.

The red flag provided a break for all drivers to change tyres as track conditions remained dynamic. Race control will determine the restart procedure, with the race expected to resume with the same grid formation as at the time of the incident.

The drama at Zandvoort has further heated up the title fight. With Verstappen out of contention, other drivers have a golden opportunity to score big points at his home circuit. Can Norris capitalise on this situation to strengthen his position at the top of the standings?
