Teemu Suninen has been nothing short of spectacular in WRC2 this season, yet his future in the world championship hangs by a thread. The Finn has admitted that his chances of continuing with Toyota beyond Rally Finland are slim.
Suninen has contested four WRC2 rounds so far: Sweden, Portugal, Estonia, and Finland. The results speak for themselves—a victory in Portugal and three runner-up finishes. This remarkable consistency is a testament to his talent, especially as he aimed to prove himself for a potential seat next year.
During Rally Finland, Suninen revealed he had done all he could to showcase his abilities. However, the harsh reality is setting in: "As things stand, I won't be able to continue in the WRC after this rally. We'll see what comes up. I've given it everything over the past few weeks and months," he said.

This news is a blow, especially given his strong WRC2 form. But Suninen is not dwelling on it. His focus has now shifted entirely to the European Rally Championship, where he currently leads the standings after five rounds.
Interestingly, this season's ERC has been heavily asphalt-based, with only one gravel round so far. That hasn't been a problem for Suninen. His worst result came at the season opener in Spain, where he finished fourth. After a retirement in Sweden, he bounced back with a second place in Rome, claimed his first ERC win in Poland, and secured another runner-up finish in the Czech Republic.
With his WRC program likely over, Suninen admits his focus for the rest of the season is on the ERC. "Yeah, definitely. We've got the rest of the season in pretty good shape. Of course, there's still work to do and we need to raise some more budget for it, but we're not far away," he concluded.
