F1 CEO Domenicali Opens Up on Verstappen Future Amid 2027 Rule Changes

Stefano Domenicali, Formula 1 CEO, has confirmed direct talks with Max Verstappen regarding the engine regulation changes set for 2027. The discussions come amid Verstappen's criticism of F1's technical direction, which he believes relies too heavily on electrical power, making racing feel "artificial".

The 2026 engine regulations, introducing a 50:50 power split between internal combustion and electric, have sparked debate. Verstappen, a four-time world champion, has been one of the most vocal opponents. His disdain for aggressive energy harvesting coincides with Red Bull Racing's dip in competitiveness, leaving him sixth in the standings after 11 rounds.

In response to driver feedback, F1 plans to shift the power split to 58:42 in favor of the ICE for 2027, increasing to 60:40 by 2028. Domenicali revealed that early simulator sessions have drawn positive responses from drivers, with Verstappen serving as a key consultant throughout the process.

"For the drivers that have already driven the change of next year on the simulator, [they say] that it's going in the right direction. And also, with Max, we discussed that," Domenicali told media including Motorsport Week. He added that any regulation change requires agreement from teams, manufacturers, the FIA, and FOM under the existing governance.

Domenicali expressed confidence that Verstappen still "loves" F1 and its future. "I think Max would be very happy. He is in a situation where he loves Formula 1, he loves the future. We are discussing together his future, and the regulations for the future. I have an incredible relationship with him," he said.

Although Verstappen has yet to commit to Red Bull or F1 beyond 2026, Domenicali remains optimistic. "Formula 1 is big enough for him to be part of us, but of course, he will decide the future the way he prefers to do. My opinion is that Max will stay with us. And I really hope so," he concluded.

A decision on Verstappen's future is expected sooner rather than later, with the Dutch Grand Prix just two weeks away. Speculation about a move to another team or even retirement persists, but the positive dialogue with Domenicali offers a glimmer of hope for F1.
