Charles Leclerc stamped his authority on the opening day of the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix by topping both Friday practice sessions at the demanding Circuit of the Americas. The Ferrari driver continued his strong morning pace into the afternoon, setting the benchmark during FP2 around the 5.5km Austin layout.
Leclerc posted a lap time of 1m35.291s just before the midway point of the second practice session, eclipsing Max Verstappen's earlier effort while Kimi Antonelli slotted impressively into second place to split the established frontrunners.
The circuit's bumpy surface and intricate mix of low-speed and high-downforce corners gave teams massive headaches as they searched for the ideal setup compromise. Qualifying simulations on fresh soft tyres further highlighted the technical hurdles, with COTA's relentless first-sector Esses punishing the rubber.

Track limits and grip issues caught out several top contenders during the afternoon runs. George Russell had a dramatic moment before brilliantly saving his Mercedes through the high-speed Esses, while Lando Norris wrestled a bucking McLaren as grip vanished in the final sector.
Ultimately, Leclerc's superior third sector secured him the top spot, finishing ahead of championship contender Antonelli and Verstappen. Behind the leading trio, Lewis Hamilton took fourth for Ferrari, and Liam Lawson delivered a promising sixth for Racing Bulls ahead of struggling McLaren entries.
