Ferrari Formula 1 driver Charles Leclerc set the pace by claiming the fastest time in the opening practice session for the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas, edging out his key rival.
The session carried the intense atmosphere of a pre-season test as compressed schedules forced teams to immediately put their traditional three-practice programs to work right from the get-go.
Regardless of the tyre compound or run plan, Leclerc repeatedly pumped in blistering laps throughout the session and ultimately headed form driver Max Verstappen by a margin of 0.084 seconds.

It was an unusual opening hour where comparable pace from leading outfits took time to emerge due to split tyre strategies, with Ferrari and McLaren dominating early running on mediums while others opted for hards.
Once teams converged onto the soft rubber later in the running, Lando Norris showed impressive pace for McLaren to secure third place ahead of the chasing pack, setting up a thrilling fight for the rest of the weekend.
