Triple Eight has announced a surprising shake-up in its technical lineup following Will Brown's victory at Ipswich, with David Cauchi returning as race engineer for car #888. Cauchi, who had been working outside motorsport since leaving Grove Racing at the end of 2025, will replace Andrew Edwards, who has been promoted to a head of performance role.
The decision was confirmed in the aftermath of Brown's emotional win at Queensland Raceway, a moment that resonated deeply with the team. Edwards, who has worked with Will Brown since 2024, will fill a position that has been vacant since Pete Ringwood was elevated to technical director following Jeromy Moore's departure to General Motors last year.
Triple Eight managing director Jamie Whincup emphasized that the move is part of a broader effort to strengthen the team's engineering resources. "We've been looking to build engineering depth at Triple Eight for some time now, and when you have both the opportunity and someone you know is 100 percent the right person for it you have to make that move," Whincup said.

Cauchi has a long history with Triple Eight, having served as Whincup's race engineer for seven years and helping him secure two championship titles. His return is on a part-time basis, starting with the pre-Enduro Cup test at Queensland Raceway on Tuesday. "I made the decision midway through last year to return to Brisbane, where I've been enjoying a full-time role outside of motorsport," Cauchi explained.
The change comes amid a challenging season for Triple Eight, including an early-season issue with an undersized air restrictor that affected the first eight rounds. Despite this, Brown's victory at Ipswich showcased the team's resilience, and with Cauchi's experience, there is optimism for the upcoming Enduro Cup.
Cauchi acknowledged the steep challenge ahead: "It'll be a baptism of fire, straight into Enduro Cup part of the season but I can't wait to work with Will, as well as some new and many old teammates." Meanwhile, Edwards described the Ipswich win as triggering emotions that had been 'suppressed', and he is ready to embrace his new role with renewed vigor.
