Fernando Alonso has expressed significant hesitation regarding his future in Formula 1 beyond the 2026 season. The 44-year-old veteran admitted he wants to avoid leaving the sport with a "bad taste," specifically referring to the risk of retiring while his on-track competitiveness has declined due to poor machinery.

The current situation at Aston Martin has complicated this decision. The team's partnership with Honda has faced a turbulent start this year, characterized by high power unit unreliability across the opening rounds. This, coupled with shortcomings in the overall chassis package, has seen the team struggle toward the rear of the field, far from the front-running form they initially anticipated.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Alonso is currently evaluating whether to commit to another term or seek a new challenge. The two-time world champion acknowledged that walking away from the sport is a difficult decision, especially when the team he is driving for is not capable of competing at a high level, which risks making his final chapters in F1 look uncompetitive.

Alonso noted that very few drivers get to choose their exit point perfectly, citing Nico Rosberg as a rare exception who retired at the absolute peak. For Alonso, the challenge is not the desire to race, but the timing of the exit. He emphasized that he does not wish to retire at a point where he feels slow or is consistently outperformed by the rest of the grid.

Despite the team's technical struggles, Alonso maintains that his personal driving standards remain at their peak. He views his ability to remain competitive since his return to the grid in 2021 as a gift, and he is determined to leave the sport only when he still feels fast and capable of performing at 100 percent of his potential.

The fear of making mistakes or feeling outpaced is the primary driver behind his current indecision. By refusing to retire during a performance slump, Alonso is prioritizing his professional legacy, ensuring that his departure is marked by speed and competence rather than a gradual fade in pace.

Ultimately, Alonso's final decision will hinge on Aston Martin's ability to rectify their technical deficits and improve the RC16's performance. If the team can recover its competitive edge, Alonso's path toward a continued F1 career becomes much clearer. However, if the current stagnation persists, the dilemma of choosing the right moment to exit will remain his primary concern.
