Johann Zarco delighted the home crowd by leading the Friday practice session at the 2026 French MotoGP in Le Mans. The Honda LCR rider asserted his dominance early, outperforming Fabio Di Giannantonio and Francesco Bagnaia, positioning himself as a strong contender to repeat his home victory from the previous year.
A technical analysis of the session revealed a significant disparity in tire management. Zarco and Di Giannantonio were able to record competitive lap times while using used rubber, indicating that their machinery's stability and grip levels were highly efficient even as the tires degraded. In contrast, riders such as Pedro Acosta and Luca Marini only managed to climb to the top of the timing screens after fitting new rubber in the final minutes of the session.
The session was marked by a high-drama incident as Francesco Bagnaia crashed on his final lap. The consequences of this crash were devastating for his teammate, Marc Marquez. Due to the resulting yellow flags, Marquez was unable to complete a clean lap to improve his time and finished 13th, which automatically relegates the defending champion to Qualifying 1 (Q1).

Pedro Acosta also showed resilience despite suffering a crash. Acosta managed to secure 10th place, proving that the KTM RC16's base speed remains competitive at Le Mans. However, consistency remains a major challenge for the Austrian squad, as evidenced by the positions of Brad Binder and Enea Bastianini, who struggled to find the same rhythm in the top ten.
From a technical perspective, Fabio Quartararo experimented with a notable modification, utilizing the Inline4 tri-plane front wing from last year's model on his Yamaha. This move was implemented after Quartararo reported improved front-end feeling during the Jerez tests, aiming to enhance braking stability in the tight, slow corners of the Le Mans circuit.
Weather conditions are expected to be a la major variable for the remainder of the weekend. While Friday's session took place under sunny and dry conditions, forecasts indicate a high probability of rain throughout the weekend. This forces teams to optimize their wet-setup options, as Le Mans is notoriously sensitive to temperature shifts and track moisture levels.
Finally, Red Bull KTM Tech3 has fielded Jonas Folger as a replacement for Maverick Vinales, who remains sidelined following shoulder surgery. Folger, who returns to MotoGP action for the first time since 2023, struggled to adapt to the lapping rhythms of the modern grid, finishing 22nd. This highlights the lapping gap for riders returning to the long hiatus of the current technical era.
