Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Toto Wolff has expressed concern about the level of attention surrounding Kimi Antonelli following the young driver’s first Formula 1 victory at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix.

The 19-year-old Mercedes driver secured a landmark win at the Shanghai International Circuit, becoming the first Italian driver to win a Formula 1 race since Giancarlo Fisichella achieved the feat two decades earlier in 2005.

Antonelli’s victory ended a 20-year drought for Italian race winners in Formula 1. Even more striking is the longer absence of an Italian Formula 1 world champion, with the last title for the country dating back to 1953.

While the achievement represents a significant milestone for Italian motorsport, Wolff warned that the national excitement surrounding the result could create unrealistic expectations for the young driver.

“First of all, you can see the hype that is going to start now, especially in Italy,” said Toto Wolff when speaking to media including RacingNews365.

The Mercedes team principal suggested that media attention and national pride could quickly elevate expectations beyond what is reasonable for a driver at such an early stage of his career.

“I can already see the headlines: ‘World champion, grande Kimi’ and whatever. And that’s really not good, because those mistakes are going to come,” Wolff explained.

According to Wolff, Antonelli remains in a development phase as a Formula 1 driver, and it would be premature to place championship expectations on him.

“He’s just a kid, so it’s too early to even think about a championship,” he added.

Despite his caution regarding the hype, Wolff acknowledged that Mercedes currently possesses a competitive car capable of fighting for victories under the new Formula 1 regulations.

At this stage of the championship and regulatory cycle, the Mercedes package has shown the performance potential required to compete at the front of the grid.

However, Wolff also pointed out that the political and strategic dynamics of Formula 1 could influence the competitive landscape over the coming months.

“Let’s see what kind of political knives are going to come out in the next few weeks and months,” he said.

Internally, Antonelli is also facing a significant challenge within the Mercedes team itself. The Italian rookie is competing alongside the far more experienced George Russell, who currently leads him by four points in the drivers’ standings following the race in Shanghai.

Russell’s longer experience in Formula 1, combined with his established position within the team, presents an important benchmark for the young driver.

“Both have equal opportunity, but it’s far too early to talk about championships,” Wolff said.

The Mercedes boss also emphasised that Antonelli’s development should focus on gradual growth rather than immediate results.

“As a young person, he just needs the maturity to grow. And he has a fantastic driver as a team-mate who has eight more years of experience in that position,” Wolff concluded.

Following his historic victory in China, Antonelli has quickly become one of the most talked-about drivers on the Formula 1 grid. For Mercedes, the priority now is to ensure that the promising start to his career continues in a controlled and sustainable way without the pressure of excessive expectations.
