The international motorsport community is in deep mourning today. Alan Jones, the legendary figure who etched his name into history as the 1980 Formula 1 world champion, has passed away at the age of 80. The passing of the Australian icon comes just three days after he celebrated his 80th birthday, following a battle with a short illness.

The sad news was confirmed by his wife, Amanda, in an official statement issued to Motorsport Australia. "We are extremely saddened to announce the passing of our beloved Alan, who passed away on 5 November following a short illness," Amanda stated. She added that he will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by those closest to him, as well as the many fans whose support he was always grateful for.

Jones' career in Formula 1 was a testament to resilience and determination. Making his debut in 1975, he captured the world's attention with a stunning maiden victory for the underdog Shadow team at the 1977 Austrian GP. That performance paved the way for his move to Williams, the team he would eventually lead to championship glory.

"Alan dedicated his life to motorsport, building a legacy that will live on through the countless people he touched along the way," Amanda continued. Jones was more than just a driver; he was an unmistakable character, both on and off the track. His 1980 title win made him the first Australian since Jack Brabham in 1966 to claim the drivers' crown.

Throughout his career, Jones secured 12 Grand Prix victories, 24 podiums, and 13 fastest laps from 116 starts. After retiring from racing, he transitioned into a successful broadcasting career on Australian television. Awarded an MBE in 1980 for his services to motor racing, his impact on the sport remains indelible. Rest in peace, champion; your legacy will live on at every corner of the track.
