Verstappen Could Trigger 'Musical Chairs' if Red Bull Exit Happens

The future of Max Verstappen in Formula 1 is once again under the spotlight. Two-time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi believes that if Verstappen really leaves Red Bull this year, it would trigger a major reshuffle across the grid, which he describes as 'musical chairs'.

Verstappen is still under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028, signed after his first title five years ago. However, reports suggest there are performance-related exit clauses, which have been a hot topic throughout 2024 following Red Bull's dip in form at several rounds.

So far, Verstappen has not officially confirmed his seat for next season, sparking speculation ranging from a move to a rival team to a complete F1 exit. Fittipaldi, speaking to F1, admitted he doesn't know the exact relationship Verstappen has with his team, but he sees a strong sense of loyalty from the Dutchman.

“Max is an incredible talent. He carries his car on his back. I think he has a big loyalty to the team, and I like that. I always liked to run many years on a team, as much as I could go. I think he has this loyalty,” said Fittipaldi.

However, Fittipaldi didn't rule out Verstappen's departure, stating that if it happens, it would cause a massive shift across the grid. “But possibly, he can leave. If that happened, it would be musical chairs. It’s going to move everybody,” he said.

Fittipaldi added that this kind of dynamic is what makes F1 exciting. “I think this part of F1 is exciting. The fans, 'Who’s going to be [there]? Where are they going?' It’s part of the sport,” he concluded.

With speculation rife, Verstappen's decision will be one of the biggest stories in the paddock this season. Will he stay, or will he trigger a domino effect that changes the face of the F1 grid? We'll have to wait and see.
