Dreams sometimes materialize much faster than anyone could ever anticipate, and that exact reality recently caught up with Dutch rider Twan Smits. Following a stellar upward trajectory in the highly competitive German championship, the young talent has made a massive career leap straight into the WorldSBK paddock for the upcoming 2027 season.

Smits' path to international recognition was forged through hard work within the Apreco Yamaha structure. Having climbed the ranks from Supersport into the premier IDM Superbike category, he showcased his true race-winning potential by dominating four separate races across the legendary circuits of Assen and Nurburgring, establishing himself as a formidable force on the grid.

His impressive speed caught the attention of the Motorxracing squad, who offered him a golden opportunity to contest the final three rounds of the WorldSBK calendar. That unexpected guest appearance ultimately blossomed into a permanent full-season contract in the world championship for 2027, forever changing the trajectory of his professional racing journey.

Despite the immense excitement surrounding his promotion, the sudden transition brings a wave of heavy emotion. Leaving behind the garage that felt like home for six years is no easy task, especially given how deeply intertwined his career has been with the squad that supported him from his early days as a sponsored helmet rider up to national stardom.

"It is an IDM story like many others," Smits reflected on his departure from the national series. "It is like a big family, everyone is nice, everyone knows everyone. Leaving the IDM so suddenly, knowing Nurburgring was my last race there, I didn't expect that. It makes me a little emotional because the IDM has been a huge part of my life."

Meanwhile, his former team is forced to regroup in his absence. Dirk Geiger currently handles the squad's on-track duties alone, while management actively scouts for a suitable second rider to complete their lineup for the upcoming racing calendar.
