Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Toto Wolff of Mercedes-AMG F1 has cautioned that the team’s dominant start to the 2026 season will mean little if it becomes complacent heading into the Miami Grand Prix.

The Brackley-based squad has opened the campaign in commanding fashion, securing victory in all three grands prix held so far. The performance of the W17 has established Mercedes as the benchmark on the grid, but that momentum was interrupted by a five-week break following the Japanese Grand Prix due to the cancellation of two Middle Eastern rounds.

Wolff emphasised that such a pause offers equal opportunity for every team to reassess and improve, warning that any early advantage could quickly diminish if development pace is not maintained. In the early phase of a new regulatory cycle, performance gains can be significant, making continuous progress essential.

"We’ve used this break to analyse the opening races honestly, address our weaknesses and continue to raise our level," Wolff said.

"We’ve started the season well, but that counts for very little if you stand still."

He also pointed to the likelihood of rivals making substantial gains during the break, suggesting that the competitive gap could narrow significantly in Miami. Teams are expected to arrive with upgrades and a deeper understanding of their cars, increasing overall competitiveness across the field.

"We also know that our competitors will have used this time effectively to improve their packages and build a deeper understanding of their cars, so we expect the field to be closer in Miami."

Beyond team development, Formula 1 has introduced a series of regulatory adjustments since Japan, aimed at addressing issues identified in the opening rounds. These changes are designed to refine the racing product without fundamentally altering the technical framework.

"As a sport, we have used this time to engage in constructive dialogue with all stakeholders. The regulatory tweaks are an evolution rather than a revolution, designed to build on the quality of racing while allowing drivers to push to the limit," Wolff explained.

The adjustments reflect collaboration between governing bodies such as the FIA, teams, and commercial stakeholders, highlighting the importance of adaptability within the current competitive environment.

With the potential for a closer field and evolving technical landscape, the Miami Grand Prix will serve as a key benchmark for Mercedes’ ability to sustain its advantage. Consistency in development and race execution will be critical as the 2026 Formula 1 season progresses into its next phase.
