Formula 1, Sportrik Media - The 2026 Miami Grand Prix is facing an increased threat of severe weather, with forecasts indicating heavy thunderstorms could significantly impact Sunday’s race conditions.

According to current projections, storm systems are expected to move across Miami on Sunday morning ahead of the 16:00 local start time. These weather cells are forecast to persist into the afternoon, travelling from the north-west to the south-east before moving across Cuba and the Bahamas and into the Atlantic Ocean.

The system originated earlier in the week over the Rocky Mountains near Denver, Colorado, before progressing across southern states including Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. It is then expected to pass over the Florida panhandle late Saturday into early Sunday, arriving in Miami in time for the 57-lap race.

Such conditions introduce significant strategic complexity, particularly in tyre selection, setup configuration, and race management. Rapidly changing track conditions could force teams to adapt in real time, making decision-making under pressure a critical factor.

Recent history underlines the potential disruption. During the 2025 Miami Sprint, thunderstorms delayed the start under red flag conditions, while Charles Leclerc crashed on his way to the grid after aquaplaning. The incident highlighted the challenges posed by standing water and reduced visibility.

However, the Miami circuit is known for drying quickly once rainfall subsides, often allowing drivers to switch back to slick tyres within a short timeframe. This creates additional strategic variables, where the timing of pit stops can become decisive.

Other sessions across the weekend are expected to remain dry, with temperatures ranging from the low to mid-30 degrees Celsius during practice, Sprint Qualifying, the Sprint race, and qualifying. This contrast means teams must prepare for both dry and wet scenarios within a single event.

With the risk of severe weather increasing, the Miami Grand Prix is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable races of the 2026 season, where adaptability and strategic execution will play a defining role as Formula 1 returns to action.
