George Russell wasted no time laying down a marker at the inaugural Spanish GP at the Madring. The Mercedes driver set the fastest long-run pace with a heavy fuel load, edging Red Bull's Max Verstappen by 0.13 seconds per lap. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli was third, 0.55s adrift.
Mercedes topped both Friday practice sessions and looked untouchable on race pace. Ferrari and McLaren, on the other hand, were left trailing. Both Ferraris were around nine tenths of a second per lap slower, while Oscar Piastri's long run was a whopping 1.51s per lap off the pace. Lando Norris couldn't complete any long runs due to technical problems.
A look back at last weekend in Italy might concern the competition. There, Mercedes was level with Ferrari on Friday long runs, while McLaren was two tenths off. But on race day, the Silver Arrows were eight tenths per lap faster than both. That pattern could spell trouble again. However, caution is needed: Madrid is a new track, and big setup changes are likely for Saturday.
Over a single lap, the gap is smaller. If you combine each driver's best sector times, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari could have set a 1:33.478, the fastest theoretical lap. Of the top six, only Arvid Lindblad managed to string all his best sectors together. So one-lap pace is still up for grabs.
Where does Mercedes' long-run advantage come from? The final sector. Mercedes already set the fastest third sector in qualifying simulations, and with fuel on board, that edge grows. Telemetry shows Mercedes uses less battery power in sector one yet remains only marginally slower. In the final sector, they have a clear top-speed advantage that pays off in long-run mapping.
It seems Mercedes hasn't shown everything yet. If they repeat this form in qualifying and the race, the Spanish GP could be a redemption story after a disappointing Italy. Verstappen and Red Bull must be wary, and Ferrari and McLaren need answers fast.
