Andrea Kimi Antonelli once again asserted his status as the Formula 1 championship leader. In the second free practice session (FP2) at the brand-new Madring circuit, the young Italian set the fastest time, beating Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. This is a strong signal that Antonelli is ready to face the challenges of a street track that demands high precision.
The Madring circuit, hosting its first Grand Prix, immediately drew praise from Antonelli. “This is a truly fantastic circuit to drive,” he said. “A real challenge for us drivers, with many high-speed corners and very close walls. We have to be extremely precise with our lines and skilled on the brakes; it’s very easy to lock up, as there are several points where you brake and turn at the same time. It’s a fun challenge and I’m really enjoying it.”
However, Antonelli agrees with many who predict the race at Madring will be short on overtaking. “It was a good first day, but there’s still a lot of work to do ahead of the rest of the weekend,” he added. “Sunday will be difficult to manage the tyres, and overtaking is expected to be quite tricky. That makes qualifying tomorrow morning even more important; we’ll focus on that aspect overnight, while also ensuring a good car for Sunday’s race.”
Antonelli’s dominance in FP2 also serves as a warning to his rivals. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton had to settle behind him, while other drivers like Max Verstappen and Lando Norris are still searching for an edge. The battle at the front is intensifying, and Madring could be a new stage for Antonelli to extend his championship lead.
Technically, the Madring circuit shares characteristics with other street tracks like Monaco or Singapore, but with higher average speeds. The combination of fast corners and barriers demands a car setup that balances downforce and braking stability. Teams will work hard to find the best compromise, especially for the qualifying session that will determine the starting grid.
For Antonelli, this FP2 result is valuable. He was not only fast but also able to adapt quickly to a new circuit. “I think we have a strong package,” he continued. “But we can’t afford to relax. Ferrari look quick, and Mercedes can’t be ignored either. We have to keep improving.”
The race at Madring is expected to be intense, with tyre strategy being key. Temperature management and degradation will be crucial, given the limited opportunities to overtake. Drivers who can keep their tyres competitive until the end will have a great chance of a strong result.
With Antonelli’s performance, the Italian public is growing more excited. If he can maintain momentum, a top step on the podium at Madring is not out of the question. But as Antonelli himself said, “Qualifying tomorrow will be very important. We’ll work hard tonight.”
