The opening stages of the Formula 1 race weekend at COTA were immediately overshadowed by technical drama after Arvid Lindblad, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Franco Colapinto were handed grid drop penalties. All three drivers breached the permitted allocation of power unit components for the 2026 F1 season.
The penalties were officially confirmed by motorsport's governing body, the FIA, during the opening practice session at the venue. This technical infringement forces team engineers to rethink their strategies in order to minimize damage during the upcoming grand prix in Austin.
Arvid Lindblad received a five-place grid penalty after Racing Bulls fitted a sixth internal combustion engine in his car. Because it marks his second breach, the British rookie faces a five-place drop rather than the standard ten-place penalty imposed for a first offense.

Meanwhile, Franco Colapinto was handed a 10-place grid penalty after moving onto his fourth control electronics component within his Alpine charger. The young driver must now dig deep during the upcoming sessions to recover from the setback.
However, the heaviest blow landed on Gabriel Bortoleto. The Audi driver is set to start Sunday's grand prix from the very back of the grid after being slammed with a massive 20-place grid penalty.
The Brazilian's severe punishment was triggered by taking on a completely new power unit, alongside shifting to his fourth energy store and control electronics of the season. Interestingly, despite the impending back-of-the-grid start, Bortoleto showed promising pace by finishing eighth-fastest in FP1, just ahead of Arvid Lindblad in ninth, while Franco Colapinto struggled down in 17th place.
