FIA and Formula 1 could return to Africa as South Africa ramps up efforts to host a grand prix at Kyalami Circuit. President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to attend a race this season as part of a strategic push to strengthen the country’s bid.

Kyalami last hosted Formula 1 in 1993, marking over three decades since the championship last visited the African continent. Sports minister Gayton McKenzie emphasised that the presidential visit is a working mission aimed at evaluating requirements across commercial, logistical, infrastructure, and safety domains.

Technically, Kyalami is central to the proposal after receiving approval for upgrades to FIA Grade 1 status. The project is led by Apex Circuit Design, focusing on safety enhancements and infrastructure improvements while preserving the circuit’s 4.52 km layout. Completion is expected within a three-year development window.

South Africa faces competition from other African nations, with Rwanda proposing a new permanent circuit near Kigali and Morocco reportedly developing a facility near Tangier. This reflects growing interest in Africa as a strategic expansion region for Formula 1.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has acknowledged ongoing discussions with multiple African candidates but stressed the importance of long-term sustainability. With the calendar already full through 2028, any new addition must align with commercial stability and event rotation considerations.

Support has also come from Lewis Hamilton, who has consistently advocated for Formula 1’s return to Africa. He highlighted the importance of bringing the sport to a new generation of fans who have never experienced a grand prix on the continent.

With political backing, infrastructure development, and support from within the paddock, South Africa’s bid is gaining momentum. However, final approval will depend on meeting FIA standards and navigating the competitive landscape for future calendar slots.
