Sebastien Buemi has admitted that his Formula E future may be beyond his control after the 2027 calendar created major clashes with his World Endurance Championship programme. The veteran driver remains in discussions with Envision Racing over a possible solution that would allow him to continue competing in both championships.
The 2027 Formula E calendar contains two dates that conflict with WEC events. The Monaco E-Prix clashes with the Spa-Francorchamps round, while the Shanghai event takes place on the same weekend as the WEC race in Sao Paulo.
Buemi’s problem is intensified because both Formula E events are double-headers. If he prioritises his complete WEC programme with Toyota Gazoo Racing, he could miss four Formula E races from a calendar featuring 21 contests across 13 events.

Missing four E-Prix would have a major impact on his championship prospects. Envision also has clauses in Buemi’s multi-year contract that allow the team to consider another driver if he is unable to miss the conflicting WEC rounds.
“We’ve often seen small changes to the calendar in the past. Even though it is probably unlikely to change, I still have hope that somehow something will happen,” Buemi told RacingNews365.
Buemi has raced for Toyota in the WEC since 2012 and is one of the few remaining drivers to have competed in Formula E since its inaugural season. He also won the all-electric championship’s second season, meaning a departure would end one of the longest careers in the series’ history.
Discussions with Envision team principal Sylvain Filippi remain ongoing. Buemi stressed that he wants to stay on the grid and will work hard to preserve his dual programme, although the final outcome will depend on the team, Toyota and any potential calendar adjustments.
“I’m going to try hard to be on the grid next year, try very hard, but ultimately, I guess it’s going to be out of my hands,” Buemi said.
Formula E and the WEC now present a scheduling challenge that is difficult to reconcile because the two clashes cover four races. Without a calendar change or an agreement over programme priorities, Buemi may have to choose between continuing his long-standing Toyota commitment and retaining his Formula E seat in 2027.
