When the lights went out at Silverstone, Ivan Ortola didn't expect to finish second. But the chaos of Moto2 played into his hands. After Manu Gonzalez lost victory to his own mistake, Ortola snatched the runner-up spot and cut 18 points from his championship deficit. He jumped from sixth to fourth, and with two wins and a second place in the last five races, his name is now being whispered as a title contender.
Despite the open door, Ortola refuses to get caught up in title talk. “Yeah, everything is possible, but I don't want to think about the championship,” he said casually. “It puts pressure on me, and I don't want pressure. I just want to enjoy racing.” For him, the recent strong results are a consequence of having fun on the bike. “I just want to give my best in every race, without any burden,” he stressed.
The Valencian rider also commented on the race's turning point, when Gonzalez was hit from behind and lost positions. “I saw it on the dashboard and thought, 'wow, this is crazy'. But I also didn't know how many laps were left, so I had to stay focused. When I saw the incident, I knew there was a chance to move forward,” he explained. Ortola capitalized on the situation to climb to second, before engaging in a fierce battle with Filip Salac.
Unfortunately, at Turn 15, Ortola admitted he misjudged his braking point. “I braked too early, and that allowed Filip to pass me,” he confessed. Despite losing the win, he still sees this podium as special. “For us, it's like a victory. We came from a couple of consistent races, and my goal is to keep this level until the end of the season,” he added.
Off the track, Ortola has secured his future by staying with the MSI team. He believes this decision is the best for his career. “I chose the best option for my future, and I'm sure good things will come from this project. I'm very happy to be part of this team,” he concluded optimistically.
