Max Verstappen received major praise from Ralf Schumacher after his Nürburgring 24 Hours performance was viewed as operating on a completely different level compared to most GT drivers. Although his victory hopes ended because of a driveshaft failure, Verstappen's pace and aggression became one of the defining stories of the iconic endurance event.
Alongside team-mates Lucas Auer, Dani Juncadella and Jules Gounon, Verstappen appeared firmly in contention for victory before the mechanical problem destroyed any realistic podium chance. The car eventually returned to the circuit after emergency repairs and finished in 38th position purely to complete a ceremonial final lap.
Speaking on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, Schumacher described Verstappen's approach around the Nordschleife as something few drivers would dare attempt. The former Toyota, Williams and Jordan Formula 1 driver highlighted several high-risk overtaking manoeuvres, including moments where Verstappen used the grass to maintain momentum during wheel-to-wheel battles.

"What Max achieved there was unbelievable. He took every risk possible and I don't think many other drivers would have dared to do that. Some of his overtakes even happened on the grass. It was incredible," Schumacher explained.
According to Schumacher, Verstappen also demonstrated a significant pace advantage over most of the field. He identified Maro Engel as the only driver capable of matching the Dutchman's speed during the race. Schumacher even suggested that Verstappen's own team-mates were losing around three seconds per lap compared to the four-time Formula 1 world champion.
Verstappen's pace advantage carried additional significance because the Nürburgring Nordschleife remains one of the most technically demanding circuits in global motorsport. Its combination of high-speed blind corners, dramatic elevation changes and constant multi-class traffic makes consistent lap time execution far more difficult than a conventional Formula 1 event. Within that environment, Verstappen's aggression and control highlighted an elite level of adaptability rarely seen outside top-tier single-seater racing.
Schumacher also emphasised the broader impact Verstappen had on the Nürburgring 24 Hours event itself. According to the German, the presence of a current Formula 1 superstar generated significant additional interest in endurance racing and attracted a much larger fan audience throughout the weekend.
"What he brought to motorsport and 24-hour racing in Germany was truly fantastic. So many additional fans came because of him," Schumacher said.
Ultimately, the race victory went to Mercedes, ending the manufacturer's lengthy winning drought at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. However, despite missing victory, Verstappen's performance remained the dominant paddock discussion because it reinforced the perceived gap between elite Formula 1 drivers and most GT competitors.
Schumacher concluded that Verstappen's Nordschleife performance served as another reminder of Formula 1's status as the highest level of motorsport. Through his combination of aggression, car control and outright pace, Verstappen further strengthened his reputation as one of the most complete drivers of the modern era.
Apakah kemenangan Nurburgring 24H lebih impresif dari gelar F1 Verstappen?
