Brian Uriarte might have become the next motocross star, not the rising Moto3 sensation he is today. But one conversation with his father's friend changed everything. Now, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rookie has already won two races in his debut season, including a stunning victory at the Sachsenring before the summer break.
Uriarte, who grew up in Cantabria, northern Spain, spent his childhood racing on motocross tracks made from sand waste from local mines. "I like motocross a lot," he told Crash.net. "I started with motocross and I think I have a good level there." He even battled with MX2 riders like Francisco Garcia and Carlos Prat.
However, when he was 10, a friend of his father suggested that Uriarte should focus on circuit racing if he wanted to become a professional. "My father got the problem that I was fast in both disciplines," he joked. "Maybe I was not the best, but I was fast in both." That conversation steered him onto the road racing path.

The decision proved right. Uriarte won the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup and Junior GP in the same year, following in the footsteps of Jose Antonio Rueda and others. Now, in the world championship, he is fighting closely with Max Quiles for the Moto3 title.
Unfortunately, his first crash of the season at Silverstone dropped him to fourth in the standings. But his talent and determination still make him a future MotoGP star. "I'm really proud about this!" he said about racing with his former motocross rivals.
Now, Uriarte is determined to bounce back in the second half of the season. With the support of the factory KTM team, he is ready to prove that the life-changing conversation was the best decision ever made.
