Oliver Solberg heads into Rally Portugal 2026 under increasing pressure after a difficult sequence of results disrupted his momentum in the World Rally Championship with Toyota Gazoo Racing.
The Swedish driver began the season in sensational fashion by winning the Monte Carlo Rally. However, since then his campaign has been affected by several setbacks, including three retirements in Kenya, Croatia, and the Canary Islands.
The biggest disappointment came in the Canary Islands where Solberg was fighting team-mate Sebastien Ogier for the rally victory before an incident on the penultimate special stage ended his challenge.

“The previous rally did not end the way we wanted.”
“But we have to take the positives from it into Portugal.”
Technically, Solberg has demonstrated competitive pace throughout the opening phase of the season. However, a combination of road-sweeping disadvantages, small mistakes, and reliability issues has prevented him from maintaining consistency in the 2026 title fight.
Following his Monte Carlo victory, Solberg struggled with road-cleaning duties at Rally Sweden after starting near the front of the field. The situation reduced available grip on the snowy stages and limited him to fourth place.
Despite losing valuable championship points in recent rounds, Solberg continues to insist that his main objective this season is to gain experience with Toyota’s Rally1 machinery before fully targeting a world title campaign.
“There is still a lot to learn.”
“But hopefully we can continue the strong feeling and performance we have shown this season.”
Rally Portugal will present another major challenge for Solberg as it marks his first appearance in a Rally1 car on one of Europe’s toughest gravel rallies. Abrasive surfaces, narrow roads, and severe tyre degradation are expected to test his consistency throughout the weekend.
The event begins with Wednesday’s shakedown before three opening special stages on Thursday. The rally features 23 stages and nearly 345 competitive kilometres, making it one of the most demanding rounds on the modern WRC calendar.
