Nathan Herne finally completed his long-awaited first laps in a Supercars machine after a six-year wait. Partnered with co-driver James Moffat, the Lismore native wrapped up the opening practice session in 15th place before taking 20th in the co-driver-only session at Mount Panorama.
Reaching this milestone was far from straightforward for the wildcard entry, who was previously refused a superlicence exemption to contest the 2020 event with the GRM squad. Despite the team's extended period away from the championship, the opening day on track was deemed a resounding success.
Speaking to Speedcafe, Herne shared his excitement about checking off his maiden laps in a Supercar, noting that the team left some performance on the table during Thursday's running due to running an alternative program compared to their competitors.

"It's cool to tick off the first laps in a Supercar," Herne told Speedcafe. "I think there were a few things we definitely left on the table that probably didn't show what we actually had on the first day."
Herne expressed satisfaction with his pace despite the timesheets failing to reflect their true potential. The team executed their run plan smoothly without encountering any mechanical failures while getting through tedious procedures like bedding in the brakes.
"Overall I'm actually really happy with the day. The team worked out well, we didn't have any mechanical failures all day," he added.
While minor mistakes occurred during a late race simulation, the car remained unscathed. Adjusting to a right-hand drive car for the very first time proved to be a unique learning curve for the young Australian at the iconic Mount Panorama circuit.
