Elfyn Evans is finally a World Rally Championship world champion. After years of coming agonisingly close to the ultimate prize, the Welshman and co-driver Scott Martin ended the 2026 season at the top of the standings with 243 points, sealing a maiden world title after a dramatic finale in Sardinia.

The final numbers underline just how tight the championship fight was. Oliver Solberg finished second on 238 points, only five behind Evans, while Sami Pajari ended the campaign just one point further back on 237. The top three were separated by only six points when the championship calculations were finally settled.

That made Rally Italia Sardegna much more than the final event on the calendar. It became the decisive stage of a championship in which three Toyota Gazoo Racing drivers arrived with genuine title ambitions. Evans ultimately emerged on top, but the title was shaped as much by pressure and survival as it was by outright pace.

For Evans, the achievement closes one of the longest waits of his career. Before 2026, he had finished as championship runner-up five times since 2014. The pattern had repeatedly left him close to the biggest prize without actually securing it. This time, however, the final calculation went his way.

Solberg appeared to have placed himself in a powerful position during the closing stages of the Sardinia finale. The championship leader was within touching distance of completing the job, only for an incident approximately 200 metres from the finish to dramatically alter the points picture.

The mistake proved costly because it affected Solberg's haul from the Power Stage and Super Sunday. Points that appeared to be within reach disappeared at the most important moment of the season, opening the door for Evans to overturn the championship battle.

Even Evans believed the title had slipped away after his own Power Stage performance. His comments captured how quickly the situation changed during the final moments of the campaign.

“Honestly, I was convinced it was all lost after our performance in the Power Stage,” Evans said. “But today proves again that in this sport, anything really can happen until the chequered flag is waved.”

Those words provide perhaps the clearest explanation of the 2026 championship. Evans did not win with a comfortable points advantage. Instead, he survived a finale in which the smallest change in circumstances could have completely rewritten the standings.

Solberg's final tally of 238 points shows just how close he came. The Toyota driver was not simply Evans' nearest challenger; he remained firmly within championship-winning distance until the final stages of the season. A five-point gap ultimately separated champion and runner-up.

Pajari made the fight even tighter. With 237 points, he finished only one point behind Solberg and six behind Evans. The final standings therefore tell the story of a genuine three-way title battle rather than a championship controlled by a single driver.

The strength of Toyota's campaign is also impossible to overlook. Evans, Solberg and Pajari occupied the top three positions, while Sebastien Ogier finished fourth and Takamoto Katsuta sixth. Five Toyota drivers therefore ended the season inside the top six.

Ogier completed the championship in fourth with 189 points, 54 behind Evans. Adrien Fourmaux was fifth on 183, only six points behind Ogier, while Katsuta followed with 175.

Thierry Neuville ended the season seventh on 134 points and was the final driver to break the 100-point barrier. Hayden Paddon finished eighth with 38, followed by Josh McErlean on 35 and Esapekka Lappi on 33. Jon Armstrong completed the supplied top 11 with 22 points.

The distribution of those points highlights the competitive divide within the 2026 championship. The battle at the front was exceptionally close, with Evans, Solberg and Pajari separated by only six points, while the gap from Pajari to Ogier stretched to 48 points.

There was also an important change to the planned calendar that shaped how the championship reached its conclusion. Rally Saudi Arabia was originally scheduled as round 14 from 11-14 November, but its WRC round was cancelled, leaving Rally Italia Sardegna as the final championship event.

The official explanation centred on ongoing regional uncertainty and its impact on logistical arrangements for the WRC event. Rally Saudi Arabia itself was not simply erased as an event, with the rally remaining scheduled in November as part of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship.

The cancellation meant that the championship would not have another WRC round after Sardinia. Whatever the consequences of the decision might have been for the title calculations, the final opportunity to score WRC championship points arrived in Italy.

That made the events around the Sardinia finish even more consequential. Solberg had the opportunity to control his own destiny, but the late incident changed the points equation. Evans, who had already feared that his title chance had disappeared, suddenly found himself on top of the championship.

The final standings therefore present a remarkable picture. Evans finished first with 243 points, Solberg second with 238 and Pajari third with 237. Six points separated the entire top three, turning the 2026 WRC title race into one of the closest possible conclusions.

For Evans, however, the significance goes beyond the mathematics. The 243-point total represents the end of a long sequence of near misses and runner-up finishes. After repeatedly coming within reach of the championship, he finally crossed the most important finish line of his career as a world champion.

For Solberg, the five-point deficit will inevitably make the ending difficult to digest. He had been within sight of the title before the late drama in Sardinia changed everything. Pajari, meanwhile, finished just one point behind him, underlining how little separated the three leading Toyota drivers across the campaign.

Ultimately, the 2026 WRC season was decided by the margins. Evans did not need a dominant championship lead. He needed to remain in contention until the final calculation, withstand the pressure and capitalise when the situation changed.

That is exactly what happened in Sardinia. When the final points were counted, Elfyn Evans was no longer the perennial runner-up. He was the 2026 World Rally Champion.
