McLaren introduced a significant development package for the MCL40 at the Miami International Autodrome in 2026, featuring seven aerodynamic modifications that fundamentally reshape the car’s performance trajectory. Under the leadership of Andrea Stella, this package represents more than incremental gains—it marks the full realisation of a concept developed since the season opener.
The front end received particular attention, especially in the interaction between the front wing endplates and revised nose geometry. McLaren enhanced outwash generation through refined flap profiles at the outer sections of the wing, enabling more aggressive airflow diversion around the front tyres. This improves vortex control and stabilises airflow feeding into the floor.
At the rear, changes were equally comprehensive, starting with a redesigned sidepod inlet and undercut geometry. These updates work in conjunction with an extensively revised floor, including modifications to the leading edge and lateral surfaces responsible for managing airflow beneath the car. The objective is to maximise diffuser efficiency, particularly under high-speed load conditions.

The engine cover has also been reshaped to optimise airflow direction towards the rear wing. New flow strakes on the rear wing endplates enhance air extraction from the diffuser by improving interaction with the beam wing. Collectively, these updates demonstrate a holistic aerodynamic philosophy focused on balance and efficiency.
Strategically, McLaren adopted a measured development approach early in the season, prioritising integration of the Mercedes power unit. This proved critical, as mastering energy management and power delivery provided a stable baseline for evaluating aerodynamic upgrades accurately.
Performance gains became evident following progress in Japan, with the Miami package further enhancing consistency across varying corner profiles. This has given Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri a more stable platform, positioning McLaren as a stronger contender against rivals such as Mercedes and Ferrari.
With further refinements expected by the Canadian Grand Prix, McLaren’s commitment to its aerodynamic direction is clear. The impact extends beyond immediate performance gains, establishing a more consistent technical foundation as the 2026 season enters a decisive phase.
