Intense action characterized the opening day of lightweight class competition at the Lusail International Circuit as Maximo Quiles showcased remarkable resilience by setting the benchmark pace under the floodlights. The reigning class pacesetter bounced back impressively from a heavy highside crash during the earlier free practice session, demonstrating both incredible speed and mental toughness.
While the championship leader recovered quickly, the paddock witnessed contrasting fortunes for other contenders. Matteo Bertelle was forced to withdraw from the remainder of the session after sustaining a broken hand in an FP1 crash, while South African debutant Kgopotso Mononyane stepped into the garage to gain valuable world championship experience filling in for injured riders.
The fight for the crucial top-fourteen spots guaranteeing direct progression to Q2 proved fiercely competitive from the outset. Early pacesetters including Veda Pratama initially held strong before David Almansa surged to the top of the timesheets with superior braking stability and optimal apex speed through the desert circuit's technical complex.

As the clock ticked down in the 35-minute session, the battle for supremacy intensified dramatically. Almansa lowered the benchmark to 2:03,372 minutes, only for Quiles to launch an immediate counter-attack, shaving another two tenths off the time with a flawless display of late braking and throttle control to reclaim the top spot.
Down the pit lane, frustration hit the Red Bull KTM Ajo squad as both factory-supported riders missed out on direct Q2 qualification and must navigate the Q1 hurdles. Meanwhile, rookie standout Rico Salmela secured an impressive direct passage into Q2 in sixth place, contrasting with Austrian newcomer Leo Rammerstorfer who faced an uphill battle further down the order.
