The opening day of action for Maximo Quiles at the Lusail International Circuit during the Qatar Airways Grand Prix of Qatar brought both sensational speed and sudden drama. Operating under intense heat with ambient temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius, the Moto3 field faced challenging dusty asphalt conditions for the first practice session of the weekend, yet the young Spaniard quickly established an unmatched competitive rhythm.
The CFMOTO Gaviota Aspar Team rider wasted no time seizing control of the timing screens, consistently lowering his lap times until he ultimately clocked a blistering benchmark of 2'04.143. That stellar effort put him nearly eight tenths of the competition clear, underlining his supreme command over the tricky desert layout as the twentieth round of the championship gets underway.
However, an otherwise flawless morning session ended on a worrying note for the squad. In the closing moments of the practice, Maximo Quiles suffered a violent highside crash that left him tumbling through the gravel trap and requiring several tense moments to regain his feet after the heavy impact.
The tricky track conditions also caught out several other contenders during the morning running. David Munoz went down early at turn 14 following an overtaking attempt on a dusty part of the circuit, while Matteo Bertelle also suffered an untimely tumble during the fast-paced opening session.
Behind the dominant pacesetter, Joel Kelso secured the second-fastest lap time ahead of Marco Morelli in third. Meanwhile, rising talent Veda Pratama showed strong early promise by briefly topping the timesheets before ultimately finishing the opening practice inside the top ten.
