Matt Payne Claims Sandown Pole with Masterclass Lap in Wet Shootout Conditions

The tension reached its peak at the iconic circuit as Matt Payne delivered a flawless performance to secure pole position during a dramatic Top 10 Shootout. Amid challenging track conditions featuring standing water and minimal grip, the Grove Racing driver showcased extraordinary composure to master his Ford Mustang through every corner.

The qualifying session was heavily disrupted by mistakes and sliding cars as drivers struggled with vanishing tyre temperatures. Chaz Mostert suffered a massive scare after missing the apex and sliding wide through the chicane before taking an unintended tour of the gravel trap. "It was really hard with no track temp and no tyre temp. With the track conditions the way they are with the streaming water, the balance just shifted too much for me, so when I tried to fire back over the kerb I didn't want to put it in the fence," Mostert explained regarding the mistake that dropped him to tenth.

Meanwhile, Matt Payne stood firm as the only driver not to change position across the session, successfully fending off a strong challenge from Cameron Waters who climbed two spots to secure second place for Tickford Racing.

Further down the order, Brodie Kostecki slipped one spot to third for Dick Johnson Racing, while Will Brown capitalized on rival errors to jump from ninth to fourth for Triple Eight Race Engineering. His teammate Broc Feeney had to settle for fifth following a messy shootout run.

Rookie standout Cooper Murray delivered an exceptional effort to claim sixth despite his Chevrolet Camaro snapping sideways out of the opening corner. Meanwhile, Anton De Pasquale lamented a late mistake that relegated him to eighth. "It did exactly what I thought would happen, but it caught me a bit off-guard. Everything else felt really good," De Pasquale remarked on his challenging run.
