MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Marc Marquez revealed that he “crashed at the right time” on his way to a dramatic victory in the 2026 Jerez MotoGP Sprint, while admitting a key strategic mistake during the race.
The Ducati Lenovo Team rider secured his first pole position of the season earlier on Saturday before converting it into his second sprint win of the 2026 campaign. However, the path to victory was far from straightforward, as he crashed from second place with five laps remaining when rain intensified at the Jerez circuit.
Following the crash, Marquez immediately entered the pitlane to switch to his wet bike, before rejoining the race and ultimately winning by over three seconds ahead of team-mate Francesco Bagnaia.

Marquez admitted that staying out on slick tyres for one lap too long was a mistake, even if the timing of his crash ultimately worked in his favour.
“Today we can say I crashed in the best way, at the correct time and in the correct corner. But you never want to crash, and especially I think it was a mistake to stay out that lap,” Marquez said.
He also referenced a similar incident from his past, recalling the 2014 Aragon Grand Prix where he crashed while leading after staying on slick tyres in worsening wet conditions.
“It was difficult, and I didn’t take the correct decision. But I was lucky I crashed at the final corner. When I crashed, I waited in the run-off area until the group passed, then I went into the pits to change bikes because the bike was also damaged,” he explained.
After rejoining, Marquez quickly regained positions, overtaking Bagnaia while other incidents further reshaped the race order, allowing him to reclaim the lead.
According to Marquez, the decision-making challenge was shared across the grid, as many riders attempted to stay out on slick tyres for too long in rapidly worsening conditions.
“All the riders made the same mistake. You think there are only a few laps left, so you try to stay out. But the rain became very heavy and the track was fully wet, so with slick tyres it was impossible,” he added.
Marquez also highlighted that his decision to pit was influenced not only by the track conditions but also by damage sustained in the crash.
“When I picked up the bike, I saw the handlebar was too close and it was difficult to ride. I knew I couldn’t continue, so I went into the pits. That was a crucial moment, because if you crash in Turn 1 or 2, the race is finished,” he concluded.
The victory underlines Marquez’s adaptability in complex race scenarios and strengthens his position in the championship battle heading into Sunday’s main race at Jerez.
