The 2026 MotoGP world championship battle entered a decisive phase as Marc Marquez secured a crucial second-place finish in the main race at the Lusail International Circuit. The star rider for the Ducati Lenovo Team admitted that he must now shift to a more conservative approach to protect his championship lead with only two rounds remaining.

The Qatar weekend presented unique challenges, given the exceptional pace expected from Aprilia machines at this venue. Marquez opted to race with maximum calculation from the opening lap, a tactical decision that ultimately allowed him to leave Doha as the highest points-scorer of the weekend, following his victory in the Saturday Sprint.

Speaking to the media after the race, the eight-time world champion explained the reasoning behind his patient demeanor during the early stages of the grand prix. Rather than taking unnecessary risks, he chose to preserve his tire compounds to ensure competitive pace throughout the entire race distance.

"It was a crucial weekend, especially because we knew the Aprilias would be very fast here. But when you are fighting for a championship, you discover things about your riding style and the bike that we did not expect beforehand," Marquez stated regarding his team's technical progression.

As the race reached its midpoint, Marquez elevated his tempo and hunted down his rivals. Capitalizing on a slight mistake by Raul Fernandez in the closing laps, the Spaniard comfortably claimed the runner-up spot.

"At the beginning, I had to be very careful with a new rear tire. If I pushed too hard and ruined the right side of my front tire, I would not be able to recover it for the rest of the race and would lose half a second per lap," he explained.

Armed with a comfortable cushion at the top of the standings, Marquez's primary focus for the final two Grands Prix will be minimizing risks and securing the championship title.
