MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Marc Marquez faced immense pressure with Gresini Racing during his first outing on a Ducati at the 2023 Valencia MotoGP Test. The session marked a decisive turning point following his departure from Honda.
The move ended a long-standing partnership that began in 2013, where Marquez secured six premier class world titles and established one of the most dominant eras in MotoGP history. However, a serious arm injury in 2020, combined with Honda’s declining competitiveness in subsequent seasons, forced a strategic reassessment. Joining Gresini Racing for the 2024 campaign on a year-old Ducati was widely viewed as a high-risk decision within the paddock.
The 2023 Valencia Test at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo drew exceptional attention, even overshadowing the championship battle between Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin during the race weekend. Marquez’s debut on the Desmosedici represented not only a technical transition but also a significant shift in the competitive landscape of MotoGP.

“The day I was most nervous was when I tested the Ducati in Valencia; it was more due to the pressure. People already know who Marc Marquez is. More than nerves, it was the pressure of not knowing if I was going to be fast on that bike or not.” (Source: Imagin Podcast)

From a technical standpoint, Marquez’s adaptation to the Ducati’s characteristics became the primary focus. In contrast to Honda’s front-end dependent philosophy, Ducati emphasizes rear stability, traction efficiency, and acceleration performance. Early indications from the test showed that Marquez was quickly adjusting to weight distribution, braking stability, and throttle response—key elements of the Desmosedici package.
Despite cold track conditions in the morning, attention remained fixed on every lap he completed. At one stage, Marquez set the fastest time, prompting a notable reaction inside the media centre. Although he ultimately finished the session in fourth position, the result was widely interpreted as a strong early signal of competitive potential for both rider and team.
The decision to switch manufacturers proved decisive for his career trajectory. During the 2024 season, Marquez secured his first grand prix victories since 2021, marking a clear return to form. His performance earned him a promotion to the factory Ducati Lenovo Team for the 2025 season.
Marquez went on to dominate the 2025 campaign with 11 wins, securing his seventh MotoGP world title and reinforcing the success of his transition strategy. His ability to adapt to Ducati’s technical philosophy and recalibrate his riding style played a central role in reshaping the competitive order on the grid.
With the foundation established during the 2023 Valencia Test, attention now shifts to sustaining that level of performance amid increasing competition. The upcoming phase of the championship will determine whether Marquez can maintain his dominance in the evolving MotoGP landscape.
