The devastating final-lap heartbreak at the Bathurst 1000 continues to weigh heavily on Lee Holdsworth, yet the veteran driver has firmly resolved to return to the grid next season. Co-driving alongside Anton De Pasquale, the 43-year-old appeared primed for his second Great Race crown before the Team 18 Camaro dramatically ran out of fuel on the very final tour.

Opening up about the crushing blow on the Rusty’s Garage podcast hosted by Greg Rust, Holdsworth admitted that the bitter pill remains difficult to swallow. “I’m not over it yet but I don’t know if I’ll ever get over it. It keeps hitting me every day that we lost that race,” he shared, reflecting on the margins that cost them victory while balancing his current career as a commercial real estate agent.

Despite the severe disappointment, the defeat has failed to deter the seasoned campaigner from committing to another entry next year. Eager to chase redemption through sheer performance rather than vengeance, Holdsworth confirmed his competitive intentions. “I’ll be back next year. I’ll definitely be on the grid at Bathurst and Tailem Bend, and I’m looking forward to that. Obviously I want to go back there and win that race again, and I don’t want to say that I want to get revenge or redemption or whatever,” he stated.

He emphasized that his primary motivation is simply returning with an equally rapid machine and capitalizing on a competitive package. Having enjoyed one of his best weeks in the paddock prior to the late-race disaster, falling short at the ultimate hurdle was particularly painful. Across 23 starts at Mount Panorama, Holdsworth noted that he has only had two genuine opportunities to win the race—converting one into victory with Chaz Mostert in 2021 and missing out in this latest heartbreaking fashion.

While formal announcements regarding his exact seat remain pending, it is understood that Team 18 is poised to exercise an option on his services for the upcoming campaign. Holdsworth rejoined the squad last year following his departure from Walkinshaw TWG Racing, securing a strong runner-up finish in 2025 alongside David Reynolds before moving into De Pasquale’s car for the current season. As De Pasquale and the team continue to process the strategy error that left them under-fueled during their final stop, Holdsworth remains focused on the future and writing a more successful chapter at the Mountain.
