The ambitious plan to bring Formula 1 back to the African continent for the first time since the 1993 South African GP at Kyalami has sparked lively discussions in the paddock, highlighted by Kimi Antonelli playfully challenging Lewis Hamilton. With a brand-new circuit slated for construction in Rwanda within four years, the topic dominated media sessions at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

When the most successful driver in motorsport history was asked what the prospective African round meant to him, a lighthearted moment unfolded. Before the British star could even formulate his response, the young rising talent stepped in with a bold demand. «You absolutely have to race at least the first event there!» he urged directly to his seasoned colleague.

The remark momentarily left the veteran driver speechless. A quick mental calculation revealed a striking milestone: by the time the lights go out for that inaugural African race in four years, he will be 45 years old—the exact same age as Fernando Alonso currently competes at in the pinnacle of motorsport.

Addressing the broader significance of an African Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion emphasized his tireless behind-the-scenes lobbying efforts over many years. His diplomatic push involved numerous high-level discussions with series management and political figures alike. «I have been pushing for a race in Africa for many, many years. There have been numerous meetings with the F1 rights holders, so many meetings with series CEO Stefano Domenicali in his office in London, but also at race weekends, countless phone calls,» he explained.

Concluding his thoughts on the profound cultural impact of expanding the calendar to emerging territories, he highlighted the educational and global unity value. «For me, that has always been a place that deserves to have a Grand Prix. It is about so much more than just a country. It is about the continent itself, and there are so many beautiful countries within it. The people are so lovely. The culture is so rich, and I think it is important that we show that to the world,» he stated.
