Jorge Martin completed a perfect 2026 French MotoGP weekend after securing both the Sprint and grand prix victories with Aprilia Racing at Le Mans. The result carried even greater emotional significance because Le Mans was the same circuit where Martin attempted to leave Aprilia one year earlier during the most difficult period of his injury-plagued campaign.

The Spaniard now sits just one point behind team-mate Marco Bezzecchi in the 2026 MotoGP championship after claiming his first grand prix victory since Indonesia 2024. Martin chased down Bezzecchi during the closing stages before eventually winning by 0.477 seconds.

"It wasn’t only physical, mentally last season was extremely tough for me. I remember being here and telling Massimo that I wanted to leave because at that moment I thought it was the best option," said Martin.

Martin joined Aprilia after winning the 2024 MotoGP title with Pramac Racing, but his first campaign with the Italian manufacturer quickly became disrupted by multiple injuries suffered during training, testing, and race weekends. The difficult situation placed major strain on Martin’s relationship with Aprilia before team CEO Massimo Rivola ultimately convinced him to remain with the project.

The Le Mans victory also highlighted Martin’s major progress in race management and adaptation to the 2026 RS-GP package. During Saturday’s Sprint, he exploded from eighth on the grid into the lead at the opening corners before controlling the race from the front. Sunday’s grand prix, however, proved significantly more demanding.

Martin dropped to seventh during the opening lap while Bezzecchi once again controlled the early stages, similar to his performances in Thailand, Brazil, and the United States earlier this season. Martin also admitted he struggled with severe arm pump and front-end instability whenever he followed other riders through traffic.

"Over the last year I learned never to give up. Today was one of those races. The front-end was moving a lot behind other riders and my arm pump was really painful," Martin explained.

From a technical standpoint, Martin demonstrated highly effective electronic mapping management and rear tyre preservation during the final phase of the grand prix. Once he recognised Bezzecchi’s rear grip beginning to fade, Martin immediately increased his pace and switched engine maps to maximise corner-exit acceleration.

That strategy ultimately secured the victory for Aprilia. Martin successfully maintained his rhythm after completing the overtake and opened enough margin to control the final laps. Ai Ogura then completed a historic Aprilia podium sweep by finishing third, securing the manufacturer’s first modern-era MotoGP 1-2-3 result.

Despite Martin’s return to championship-winning form, his long-term future remains one of MotoGP’s biggest talking points. He is widely understood to have already lost his Aprilia seat for 2027 to Francesco Bagnaia and is reportedly preparing to join Yamaha. For now, however, the Le Mans victory firmly re-establishes Martin as one of the leading contenders in the 2026 MotoGP title fight.
