Ahead of the race weekend, Formula 1 is facing a federal legal dispute involving a crucial component supplier. Former fuel flow meter provider Sentronics Holdings LTD has filed a lawsuit against its successor Allengra GmbH over alleged patent infringement.
The legal case was lodged at the US District Court for the Western District of Texas. Sentronics claims that the flow meter sensors currently fitted to every car on the grid infringe upon its registered United States patent rights.
According to the court filing, the plaintiff asserts that independent laboratory testing confirmed the rival devices utilize the same patented methodologies. Patent number 11,391.609 specifically relates to a method and associated flow meter for measuring fuel flow rates in vehicles.

Motorsport governing body FIA utilizes these specialized sensors to cap engine power and ensure all participating teams burn energy at the exact same maximum legal rate. Sentronics previously served as the exclusive supplier from 2018 through 2025 before Allengra secured the contract for the 2026 to 2030 window.
Sentronics argues that importing and operating the parts during races held within the United States constitutes direct patent infringement. The complaint also highlights the deployment of the disputed sensors across other American-hosted racing championships including WEC and IMSA.
"Sentronics Holdings Limited files this Complaint for infringement of its United States Patent No. 11,391.609 through its making, using, selling, offering for sale, or importing ultrasonic fuel flow measurement devices into the United States," stated the official legal complaint.
The lawsuit further implicates racing teams and the governing body for utilizing the hardware at events across Austin, Miami, and Las Vegas. Legal proceedings in the federal court remain ongoing as the race weekend gets underway.
