IndyCar IR-28 Chassis Impresses Drivers in Demanding Sebring Test

IndyCar’s next-generation car completed another major milestone earlier in the week by running a rigorous two-day test at Sebring International Raceway in Florida. The notoriously bumpy circuit, featuring multiple surface types, serves as the ultimate testing ground to simulate a street course within a closed track configuration.

Star drivers Alex Palou and Alexander Rossi once again shared driving duties to put the brand-new chassis through its paces. Over the course of the two-day session, Palou completed 43 laps, while Rossi pushed through an impressive 134 laps to gather crucial telemetry and data.

The development car held up remarkably well throughout the demanding schedule, leaving both drivers thoroughly impressed with the minimal issues encountered. Sebring's harsh environment provided the exact engineering challenges needed for this phase of the project.

"What’s good about this place is it’s the poorest-quality surface that you can have in a permanent road course," Rossi explained regarding the unique track characteristics. He noted that despite the high grip levels, the bumps and pavement changes offer a realistic preview of what drivers experience on street circuits.

Highlighting the driving dynamics, Rossi expressed immense satisfaction with the handling and the noticeable upgrades implemented by the engineering team. "It generates more grip in high-speed corners. It’s a very nice car to drive. It’s well-built and incredibly well-engineered," he stated.

During the test, Rossi also experienced running in dirty air for the first time as the IR-28 shared the track briefly with current-generation machinery participating in a separate Firestone tire test, providing valuable data regarding following traffic.
