MotoGP, Sportrik Media – The radical 2027 MotoGP technical regulations are predicted to make premier class prototype bikes up to 2.5 seconds slower than current machinery. This marks the most significant overhaul in over a decade.

The headline change is the shift to 850cc engines from the 1000cc formula in place since 2012. Additionally, banning ride height devices and substantially reducing aerodynamics will contribute to the initial performance drop.

According to Loris Capirossi, Dorna's safety chief and former rider, the 2027 bikes will be up to 2.5 seconds slower.

“The motorcycles will be up to 2.5 seconds slower,” stated Capirossi.

“It will be just like in 2007, when the 800cc bikes were introduced [to replace the 990s]. Initially, it’s normal for them to be slower.”

Data from early manufacturer engineer simulations indicates a range of 1.5 to 2.5 seconds slower. The primary factors are the absence of spoilers and wings, combined with the smaller engine capacity.

Capirossi further noted that history will repeat itself.

“In my opinion, history will repeat itself. Initially, things will usually move more slowly: the regulations were adapted precisely for this reason, but with the next stages of development, they will speed up again.”

Other changes include Pirelli replacing Michelin as the official tyre supplier. The core aims of these rules are to enhance safety and improve on-track spectacle, given that current MotoGP bikes are the fastest in history, with lap records tumbling at nearly every circuit in 2025.

Several manufacturers, including KTM and Honda, have tested 850cc engine prototypes this winter. In-depth analysis suggests that a 30-50 percent downforce reduction will impact braking stability and cornering, though long-term development is expected to close the gap, similar to the 2007 transition.

With the dominant Ducati Lenovo Team featuring Marc Marquez, these shifts could level the playing field among manufacturers like Aprilia and Yamaha.
