Ryan Preece emerged victorious in a thrilling 160-lap race at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday, a win that also dashed Shane van Gisbergen's hopes of securing a NASCAR playoff berth, as he finished outside the safe zone.
Van Gisbergen, who had been impressive throughout the weekend, saw his Chase hopes evaporate after being caught up in a dramatic finish. A decision to pit under caution, fearing a fuel shortage, left him restarting from 27th and unable to make up ground.
The race went into overtime after a heavy crash involving Carson Hocevar. The #77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro got loose and shot up the track, triggering a multi-car incident. Erik Jones of Legacy Motor Club had nowhere to go and plowed into the back of Hocevar. Ty Gibbs was also an innocent victim, spinning to avoid the chaos.
On the final restart, Preece, running second behind Zane Smith, took the lead after Smith made contact with Tyler Reddick and spun. Preece then held on to take the checkered flag, securing his first win of the season.
With this result, Preece locked in his playoff spot, while van Gisbergen's hopes were extinguished. The race underscored the fierce competition in NASCAR, where strategic calls and luck can change everything in an instant.
