Fabio Di Giannantonio's difficult weekend at Aragon took another turn for the worse. The Ducati rider crashed out on lap two of the Sprint, extending his winless streak and leaving him 46 points adrift of the championship lead.
A promising start quickly unravelled as Diggia lost the front end under braking, sending his VR46 machine into the gravel. It marked his fourth Saturday zero of the season, a heavy blow given that his direct rivals – with the exception of the injured Ai Ogura – all scored points. The gap to leader Jorge Martin now stands at 46 points, making the title dream look increasingly distant.
“Today’s sprint start was good, but unfortunately I didn’t have a great feeling,” Di Giannantonio admitted, struggling particularly with the rear of his bike. “When I arrived at the braking point, I was too far off the ideal line. I lost the front and slid out. Fortunately, I’m okay, but it’s a shame.”
The focus now shifts to fixing the bike for Sunday’s main race. Despite the setback, Diggia remains optimistic about the package’s potential. “We’ll work on some things on the bike for tomorrow,” he said. “We’ve seen that the Ducati is very fast here, so that’s positive. My goal for tomorrow is to be as close as possible to the front riders and aim for a top-5 finish.”
With 46 points to recover, the title challenge is hanging by a thread. But Di Giannantonio has shown resilience before, and Sunday’s race offers a chance to reset. Can he turn the weekend around and close the gap once more? The paddock will be watching closely.
