Garry Rogers Motorsport (GRM) is making a comeback to Supercars with a splash. The Melbourne-based team will hold a two-day test at Winton Motor Raceway on Tuesday and Wednesday in preparation for its wildcard entry in the Bathurst 1000 on October 8-11.
Interestingly, Garry Rogers Motorsport will sport a retro livery inspired by Garry Rogers' second-ever race car, an Appendix J EH Holden. The livery is the latest homage from Garry's son, Barry Rogers, who has also added the legendary 'Hoon' numberplate front and rear.
The Chevrolet Camaro, purchased from Triple Eight, will be tested at Winton before running at Bathurst with a livery inspired by the team's 2000 Great Race win. However, for the test, the car will run a livery resembling Rogers' EH Holden.
The EH Holden itself has a fascinating history. Rogers acquired it by swapping a near-new XR GT that sat on his used car lot. Although raced for three years with some success, the EH is most famous for an incident at Sandown that Rogers recounted to Australian Muscle Car Magazine in 2007.
“The EH ran drum brakes on the front and because they were so dodgy we ran Mercedes-Benz drums and brake shoes sourced from America,” Rogers recalled. “In Saturday practice the pedal went to the deck and I had no brakes. I speared through the bridge and landed in the dam. The car sunk and there is a photo somewhere with me standing on the roof! We pulled it apart that night and put it back together and I raced it the next day. And those were the days without paid mechanics!”
Rogers sold the EH in 1970 when he temporarily bailed out of racing during a tough period for his used car business. He returned to competition in the mid-1970s with a Ford Escort Sports Sedan, and went on to make 14 Bathurst 1000 starts as a driver before becoming a team boss in V8 Supercars.
GRM is returning to Supercars for the first time in six years, fielding a wildcard for Nathan Herne and James Moffat at Bathurst. The team took delivery of the Camaro from Triple Eight in early August after a mooted lease deal with Erebus Motorsport fell through.
The Winton test has been granted dispensation from Supercars to add a second day as the team gets up to speed with its equipment. GRM's Camaro competed in the last two Bathurst 1000s as the Triple Eight-run Supercheap Auto wildcard. This year, it will be paired in the Bathurst pit lane with the now Team 18-run Supercheap entry of Craig Lowndes and Bayley Hall.
