The tension was palpable around the circuit as the elite field prepared for a high-stakes Top 10 Shootout. Matthew Payne delivered a stellar performance to secure pole position, clocking an impressive 1:08.110s lap time behind the wheel of his Ford Mustang. Carrying over his blistering pace from earlier sessions, the young charger translated his speed into a crucial grid advantage.
Benefiting from overnight adjustments focused heavily on soft tyre performance, the #19 machine navigated the tricky layout with exceptional stability. Drivers faced a constant balancing act between aggressive apex attacks and managing the unforgiving kerbs that line the circuit. The engineering crew's meticulous setup changes ultimately paid dividends when it mattered most.
"I had great confidence after yesterday, obviously converting in the same positions," Payne reflected following his masterclass run. "We made a couple of changes overnight just for the soft tyre and it seems to have been in the right direction. It’s not easy. You don’t want to mess it up. It’s hard around here because there are so many spots you absolutely need to nail, especially with the kerbs."

This latest triumph marks his ninth pole of the campaign, setting up a thrilling championship conclusion at the Adelaide Grand Final. Brodie Kostecki remains the only contender mathematically capable of challenging him, having secured his Adelaide berth through a commanding victory in Saturday's opening race. However, Payne's healthy margin in pole positions provides a strong psychological edge heading into the season finale.
"Me and Adelaide have got a pretty good relationship," Payne noted regarding the upcoming trip. "I’m pretty happy we’re heading there soon and obviously I’ve got a couple in the bank compared to him. It’s pretty cool."
Further down the grid, Cooper Murray delivered an outstanding third-place effort for PremiAir Racing, locking in a spot alongside Kostecki on the second row. Meanwhile, Broc Feeney orchestrated a solid recovery drive, fighting his way upward from tenth to sixth to cement a competitive starting slot for the main event.
