Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Gianpiero Lambiase is set to depart Red Bull Racing, bringing to a close a decade-long tenure that helped shape one of the most successful driver-engineer partnerships in modern Formula 1.
The 45-year-old engineer is best known for his collaboration with Max Verstappen, serving as his race engineer since the Dutch driver joined the team in 2016. Together, they secured four world championships and more than 70 Grand Prix victories, establishing a period of sustained dominance.
Lambiase’s path to Formula 1 success began with a mechanical engineering degree from University College London. He entered the sport in 2005 as a data engineer with Jordan Grand Prix, remaining with the team through its transitions into Midland, Spyker, and later Force India.

In 2009, he worked as race engineer to Giancarlo Fisichella when Force India achieved its first pole position and podium finish at Spa-Francorchamps. He later engineered drivers including Vitantonio Liuzzi, Paul di Resta, and Sergio Perez, building extensive technical experience across multiple eras of the sport.
Lambiase joined Red Bull in late 2014, initially working with Daniil Kvyat. A pivotal moment came in 2016 when Verstappen replaced Kvyat ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, with the new partnership immediately delivering victory on debut.
Over subsequent seasons, the Verstappen-Lambiase pairing developed into one of the most effective collaborations on the grid. Their peak success came between 2021 and 2024, when Verstappen secured four consecutive world titles, underpinned by consistent execution and strategic precision.
Beyond his role as race engineer, Lambiase advanced within Red Bull’s organisational structure and was promoted to Head of Racing in 2024, expanding his influence across broader operational and performance areas.
Their radio communications during races became a defining feature of the partnership, often reflecting direct and uncompromising exchanges. Despite this, Verstappen has consistently highlighted Lambiase as a central figure in his Formula 1 success.
With his move to McLaren, Lambiase takes with him extensive experience in race strategy, performance management, and team operations at the highest level of the sport.
This transition marks the end of a significant chapter for Red Bull while opening a new phase in Lambiase’s career. Its impact will be closely monitored, particularly in terms of how Red Bull adapts to the loss of a key figure and how Lambiase integrates into McLaren’s technical structure.
As Formula 1 moves forward, the focus will shift to the competitive implications of this change and whether Lambiase can replicate his previous success in a new environment.
