F1, Sportrik Media - George Russell has raised concerns over what he described as a “quite annoying” characteristic of the 2026 Formula 1 cars, as drivers adapt to the significantly revised energy harvesting demands of the new power unit regulations.
The 2026 rules increase reliance on electrical deployment, forcing drivers to use lower gears through corners to keep engine revs high and generate battery charge. This approach alters traditional cornering technique, prioritising energy recovery over purely optimised exit speed. As a consequence, driving rhythm has shifted compared to previous hybrid eras.
To prevent the battery from draining completely along extended straights, drivers are lifting off the throttle earlier than conventional braking points and coasting for longer before turn-in. Russell illustrated the sensation using an unconventional supermarket analogy, suggesting the process feels unnatural and disconnected from instinctive racing behaviour.
The adaptation process is not isolated to Russell. Oscar Piastri has also acknowledged that drivers are effectively unlearning habits developed since their early karting years to accommodate the new energy regeneration balance. At team level, Andrea Stella of McLaren has urged close monitoring of certain power unit characteristics, flagging potential operational concerns during pre-season testing.
Manufacturers including Mercedes and Red Bull Racing continue to refine software calibration, harvesting maps and deployment strategies following early running in Bahrain. The integration between chassis setup and electrical output management is emerging as a defining factor in overall performance under the new framework.
With limited test mileage available before the season opener, teams face a compressed window to optimise energy deployment efficiency without compromising drivability. The 2026 regulations are already demonstrating that beyond technical architecture, they are reshaping the fundamental driving philosophy of modern Formula 1 competition.
